Math Fact QUIZ for Fluency and Writing

Math Fact Quiz every Friday
We have been using these first nine weeks to cover the math facts for numbers 1-9 adding and subtracting.  These are facts that the students should already know fluently. (without using their fingers)
We are testing them for one minute and the goal to be proficient should be 15 in a minute.

Here are two websites to print off practice quizzes:

Activities for the house:
Tape math facts around the house to review when you or your child pass that card.... (bathroom mirror, kitchen table, refrigerator, car, bed, ceiling over bed, bath tub, t.v.)

After Christmas we will begin fluency quizzes with two digit numbers.

Writing - Writer's Workshop
At our first Open House in August, I explained that Second Grade writing is a process of teaching each area and skill through out the year.  Our ultimate goal is that each student be proficient by THE END OF THE YEAR....that is probably a relief to hear again.
If your child scored Below Basic on the writing portion of their report card, that would mean that they are not following our Student Rubric where they are to check off each area to be included in their writing.  This is an independent effort that they students must give in showing that they have included what we have covered for that writing lesson.
After conferencing with the students with their rubric, I am able to point out changes that need to be made, details that need to be added, and areas that the students need to pay closer attention to.

Some ways that you can help your child at home are:
Have them keep a journal...write about the days events, a t.v. show, ball practice, weekend activity, ANYTHING.  Remind them to use the GOOD WRITER RULES list that I sent home with each student a couple of weeks a go.
