Math-
Please make sure that your child knows how to identify the coins (penny, nickel, dime, quarter) and also knows the value.
We will continue this week with telling time to the 5 minute intervals.
Reading-
We have started my FAVORITE unit - Journey to Freedom
We are reading many books related to slavery and segregation. I LOVE how the students have jumped right in to ask questions and give their opinions on these events.
Writing-
We are writing Explanatory text this nine weeks. We will also be working on a research project starting next week.
Some grades have dropped in writing these last two writing tasks due to students not taking their time to look over their work. I give the students a check list and a charted list of expectations in their writing- all they have to do is follow the guide and then use the check list. Many students are checking off that they have added each expectation (detail), when they have not even started.
I model the writing activity using the same chart that they will use, while the students interact with my writing. There is no reason why each student should not have higher scores in the areas of content and style. The check list is to remind them what to check for in the areas of sentence formation and mechanics.
I tell them each time that they write, that I can guide them and give them models and guides to follow, but I CAN'T MAKE THEM DO IT....they have to take pride in their own work and push through each and every task, by giving it their best---and THEN still ask, WHAT ELSE CAN I DO TO MAKE IT BETTER?
My sermon of the week, last week was, when ever you write-no matter if it's for writing class or math class, it should be their best handwriting.
I feel like many kids are not writing enough outside of school to make it a natural event when it comes to: writing complete sentences, automatic capitalization a the beginning of a sentence and punctuation at the end, detail that have support, and story order. Challenge your child at home to WRITE at least once a week about an event at school, home, church- WHATEVER....and then allow them time to read it to you to celebrate!
